After proving yourself against jobbers in amateur matches, try to land a spot on WWE Television, taking on allcomers before finally earning an illustrious title shot. SMACKDOWN: THERE GOES THE PAIN? (10th March 2004)
The rumour mill is on overdrive today with word that Brock Lesnar informed the WWE management at the SmackDown! tapings last night that WrestleMania XX will be his last date working with WWE. He apparently has plans to try out for NFL. This comes after Lesnar revealed that he has been upset of late about the direction of his character, and just generally feeling "burned-out" with the travelling. Lesnar was also not keen on being "fed" to the Undertaker after WrestleMania, especially when The Undertaker's old gimmick is all about "not selling" for the other wrestler. Lesnar thanked Vince McMahon, Jim Ross, and Gerry Brisco for finding him "in college", and also gave thanks to both Paul Heyman and The Big Show for helping him with his wrestling career. He was said to be very emotional after the announcement, and at this point in time, it seems that WrestleMania 20 will be the last time we see Brock Lesnar not just in an WWE ring, but wrestling altogether. Whether this will turn out to be true has yet to be seen, but it does raise the question whether the 'Next Big Thing' will still be included in Smackdown 6. Stay tuned for more on this breaking story as it develops.

Last year the Elimination Chamber debuted on WWE Television, and was consequently added to Smackdown 5. What matches have been used on TV this year? Visit the 'SD6 Exclusives' section to find out!

Former WWE star Ray Fernandez, aka "Hercules" Hernandez passed away today at the age of 46. He died in his sleep. Hercules began wrestling in 1979, featuring in promotions such as Mid South and Smokey Mountain. He rose in popularity during the 80's, when he worked in the WWF. We would like to extend our sympathy to his family at this time.

MACHO MAN JOINS LOW SHOWDOWN (4th March 2004)
As revealed by www.Smackdown5.com back in January, Acclaim today confirmed that Macho Man Randy Savage is to be part of Legends of Wrestling Showdown. Currently under development with Acclaim Studios Austin, LOW: Showdown features signature entrances and taunts for each of its 70+ Legends and an array of bone-breaking matches, including Table, First Blood, Iron Man, Hardcore, Ladder, Cage and Battle Royal. “Every sport has a handful of legendary athletes who possess an extraordinary ability to connect with the fans,” said Brian Shields, Brand Manager for Acclaim. “Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage is one of those athletes and we’re thrilled to announce his involvement in LOW Showdown. Wrestling fans of all ages have been waiting to see this legend back inside the ring and heat things up the way that only the Macho Man can.” “OH YEAH! The Madness is back! The thought of returning to the ring with Acclaim for LOW Showdown gives the Macho Man goose bumps,” said Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage. “Don’t be mistaken; I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to drop the big elbow on anyone who gets in my way. I’ve been on one side my whole career and that’s mine. I’ve made it clear who I’m gunnin’ for - the only question is, ‘will he accept my challenge?’ Find out this June, as the most dangerous man in the history of professional wrestling returns. WWE REMOVES MENTION OF NEW GAME (26th February 2004)
Yesterday news was leaked by Dr Tom Pritchard on his column on WWE.com, regarding a new wrestling game in production. Today, the page has been removed from the site, and replaced with a message saying 'The page you have requested has either been moved or removed from the site.' Did he say something he shouldn't have? The site now links to his previous column, written last week. Perhaps they were hoping to make an official statement first. Either way, the good news is there's another wrestling game on the way!

WWX RUMBLE ROSE TRAILER ADDED (26th February 2004)
I have added a link to the first WWX Rumble Rose trailer. The female-only wrestling game is being developed by Konami and made by Yukes (Smackdown programmers). GIGANTE DEVELOPING NEW WWE GAME! (25th February 2004)
I have recieved word that Studio Gigante are developing a new WWE game. The studio previously worked on the Xbox exclusive beat-em-up 'Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus'. Dr Tom Pritchard from WWE visited the Studio on 15th February to supervise a motion-capture session. Regarding which, Tom commented: 'Doing motion capture for a video game is a pretty cool gig. I had the privilege of working with some great people in Los Angeles at the House of Moves studio. Ohio Valley Wrestling developmental talents Mike Bucci (Nova), Aron Stevens and John Hennigan suited up to duplicate some very tricky and intricate moves. I was there as official “supervisor,” which basically means I would suggest or request various things throughout the day. It looks like THQ will be coming out with the new game by early next year. Until then, there’s a lot of motion capture to be done. There are at least five more sessions to do. The days usually go from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The House of Moves crew and its facility are first-class. THQ producer Nick Wlodyka and Studio Gigante’s Mike Vinikour and Richard Ho made sure the shoot ran smooth and are great people to work with.' He went on to add 'Nick took us out for Korean BBQ on Wednesday night, and we closed the place down. The Los Angeles trip was full of long days but was well worth it. I’m anxious to see the game when it’s finished. The guys even added some extras and moves that weren’t on the list. I’m sure they came from watching Danny Davis tapes, as well. That’s the great thing about OVW. The array of tapes and material available to talent is incredible.' As Smackdown 6 and reportedly Wresltemania XX are already well in production, all signs point to the new game being released on Xbox, with a release date pointing to early 2005. I will indevour to find out more on this exciting new game in coming weeks, so stay tuned for the latest news as it breaks!

Originally revealed by us in January, Acclaim have now officially confirmed that Sting will be part of the ever growing roster of Legends of Wrestling: Showdown. "The addition of Sting to the SHOWDOWN: Legends of Wrestling supercard is something wrestling fans and Acclaim have craved since the brand's inception," said Brian Shields, Brand Manager for Acclaim. "Incorporating a wrestling icon of Sting's caliber further illustrates our commitment to creating an unmatched roster of wrestling legends." "To return to the ring as a Legend is a huge thrill for me," said Sting. "I have read the reports and heard the rumors regarding my whereabouts. WMXX FAKE PICTURE CIRCULATING NET (19th February 2004)
There is a fake picture - supposedly taken from the forthcoming Gamecube title 'Wrestlemania XX' circulating the net. The source of the picture claims it was originally posted at IGN, and displays a 'never before seen' image of Randy Orton. The truth however is that the screenshot is actually a CAW made using the PC version of Raw 1. I will not be posting the image here, in order to stop rumours spreading further. As soon as the first genuine pics are released, we will be the first to have them. Stay tuned to Smackdown5.com!

TWO WWE SUPERSTARS FIRED (12th February 2004)
I have been informed that both Earnest 'The Cat' Miller and Chris Kanyon have been released from their WWE contracts. It seems that World Wrestling Entertainment are cutting back on superstars that aren't used very often. A similar situation occured a few weeks ago with Zach Gowen, who was out of action since last October. It's a pretty safe bet that none of these guys will be featuring in the forthcoming Smackdown 6.

ZACH GOWEN WON'T BE IN SMACKDOWN 6? (4th February 2004)
There is now very little chance of Zach Gowen being included in the roster of Smackdown 6. This morning, WWE ended its contractual relationship with Zach Gowen after he met with Jim Ross from Talent Relations “Zach is only 20 years of age and I would be very surprised if we don’t see him in a WWE ring again some day," Ross said. "We all have great respect for Zach’s passion and wish him nothing but success." Zach was rarely seen since the No Mercy PPV in October 2003 when he faced Matt Hardy. Previous superstars to leave WWE including Hulk Hogan and jeff Hardy were subsequently removed from Smackdown 5. More news as it breaks.

MORE LEGEND SHOWDOWN DETAILS! (24th January 2004)
Here's the latest info regarding Legends of Wrestling Showdown. It seems Acclaim have taken a similar path to THQ, and wrestlers abilities will be more accurate. Therefore you won't see a huge guy doing a moonsault off the top rope. As the season mode takes you through different time periods, each wrestler will have 4 costumes to represent which era they are in. Confirmed arenas include Madison Square Garden, The Cow Palace and the Toronto Skydome. You will be able to form a stable in season mode, and call for assistance when you need it. The storylines were written by former WWE writer Kevin Kelly. Storylines will offer the chance to recreate an event, or make a different decision to see how the storyline could have played out differently. Lastly, the latest news is that LOW Showdown may be delayed till June 2004 in order to perfect the gameplay mechanics and release the best game possible. Stay tuned for more news as it breaks!

WWE DVDS RELEASED TODAY (12th January 2004)

WWX RUMBLE ROSE FIRST DETAILS AND IMAGES! (11th January 2004)
Konami Tokyo along with Yuke's and Polygon Magic are jointly working on WWX: Rumble Rose, a wrestling game full of attractive women, which is said to boast some of the best graphics ever seen on Playstation 2. "WWX is a powerhouse combination with some of the best wresting action found on any platform, sexy female models, audacious poses and bold moves - all delivered with state-of-the-art graphics for a visually stunning game," said Akari Uchida, producer, Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo. "When Konami approached us with the concept, we could hardly wait to get started," said Yuke Taniguchi, president of Yuke's Entertainment. "We are excited to develop a new style of wrestling game - one that provides a high quality wrestling experience, but also introduces humor and a whole lot more sex appeal." Though it is planned to be a graphics-intensive experience, Rumble Rose will also feature an interesting combat system that allows players to develop unique styles for their wrestlers. Players will be able to change the personalities of their wrestlers through their actions in the ring, which will then translate into changes in costume, attitude, and wrestling style options. Insults and taunts will prove a lot more important here than in your typical wrestling title too, and many of the maneuvers are said to leave opponents in, what we will call, "compromising positions". At press time, only two different characters have been officially revealed: Dixie Clemets (country western cowgirl) and Reiko Hinomoto (classic Japanese female wrestler). Each one boasts a unique array of moves like the Dixie Buster, Double Moonsault, and the classic German Suplex, and their methods of pulling them off are quite "interesting." WWX Rumble Rose is due for release in November 2004. With the creators of Smackdown 5 and Dead or Alive teaming up, this sounds like it could be the greatest game ever! To view the first character models from the game, please visit the 'WWX Rumble Rose' page in the 'Games' section! More details on this exciting new game soon!

WWE SUPERSTARS RELEASE ALBUM (22nd December 2003)
You’ve bobbed your head to the entrance music and air-guitared to their duets with recognised music stars. Now, the Superstars of WWE are taking centre stage with their own original recordings and music performances. WWE “Originals” will give fans a chance to see their heroes in a whole new light when its release on 12th January, from Sony Music. A 12-song compilation, WWE Originals will feature all new material from your favourite WWE Superstars. No cover versions here, just block-rocking originals that range from pop and rap, to nu-metal and rock. Stone Cold Steve Austin reinforces his public perception as a hard drinking, hard living S.O.B on the appropriately titled interlude, “ Where’s The Beer?” whilst Chris Jericho summarises his in-ring arrogance with his ode to self “Don’t You Wish You Were Me?” From the Latino leanings of Rey Mysterio’s “Crossing Borders” to the tough talking rap of John Cena’s “Basic Thugonomics”, there’s something for all music fans to get their teeth into. Even the WWE Divas get involved, with Stacy Keibler putting her 41-inch legs to good use with “Can’t We Just Dance?” and Trish Stratus answering the dreams of millions of young men with the seductively-titled, “I Just Want You”. It’s a collection that all music and WWE fans will want to get their hands on. Plus, for a limited time, an additional 30-minute “making of” DVD will be included in the package, an even greater reason to rush out and get it. Get ready to get down with the WWE Superstars, but remember, this is “Originals”, not “Sing-a-long with The Rock”! WWE Originals will be released on 12th January 2004 and is available to pre-order from our 'Online Store'!

Wrestling fans with a thirst for nostalgia will once again have an opportunity to see "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes drop his trademark "bionic elbow," as Acclaim today announced that it has exclusively signed Rhodes to appear in Legends of Wrestling: Showdown. The video game is currently under development with Acclaim Studios Austin and is scheduled for release in April 2004 across the next-generation gaming platforms. "Through Showdown's era-based Career Mode fans can relive 'The American Dream's' rise through the 70's and 80's and recreate his classic feuds and battles against some of the biggest names in the history of professional wrestling." "When the legend becomes reality, make the legend into a game," added "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes. "'The American Dream' returns to the ring like no other, baby! There's only one 'American Dream,' one bull of the woods and that's me, Dusty Rhodes. I've held championships all over the world and it's an honor to be part of this roster and to work with Acclaim. Make no mistake about it daddy, this April my 'bionic elbow' will be dropped on all comers and we gettin' funky like a monkey."

At present, Rockstar Games, the makers of the popular "Grand Theft Auto" series, are the leading candidates to produce the forthcoming TNA games. Talent has been told that they will need to sign releases before the deal can be finalized. THE FIRST RULE OF FIGHT CLUB IS... (18th December 2003)
...you do not talk about Fight Club. Vivendi Universal Games announced today the development of Fight Club for the PS2 and Xbox. Due out in late 2004, Fight Club, is set to deliver an intense experience that will combine the characters, settings, artistic style, and story elements from the movie with a realistic fighting system that will appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers. In the world of underground fighting, fists do the talking and the fight isn't over until someone goes limp, taps out, or is beaten. Players will be engrossed in this gritty, visceral world by fighting as one of the many characters from the gripping film. Fight Club, a "no-holds-barred" fighting game, will portray the brutality of street fighting while encompassing the action and story elements from the movie with intense visuals, untraditional moves, and bare-knuckle destruction. "Fight Club is set to deliver a fighting game that will portray the experience of a realistic fighter that incorporates many elements from the Fight Club movie," said Luc Vanhal, VU Games' North American President & COO. "Genuine Games has stepped up to the plate to develop a fighting game that will capture the raw intensity of street fighting that will appeal to movie fans, hardcore fighting game fans and casual gamers alike."

While many of you were dissapointed to learn that Sky wouldn't be broadcasting the latest WWE PPV Armageddon, there is a solution. Many of you may be aware that viewers in the USA can stream the WWE PPVs live on the internet. They have now decided to expand it's availability to the United Kingdom, Guam, Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia, The Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden! The cost of the PPV is only $17.95, which works out the same as what UK viewers would pay on Sky Box Office. It is reccomended that you have a fairly quick internet connection to make full use of the Live Streaming event. To order the PPV, simply head over to www.WWEShopZone.com or click on the link at the top of the page. Thanks to Paul Gibson for the heads up!

NO MORE UK WWE PPVS! (5th December 2003)
Sky Box Office in the UK has dropped airing WWE PPV's. Raw's Armageddon PPV will be the first PPV not to air in the UK since 1997. NWA:TNA VIDEO GAME UPDATE! (7th October 2003)
We originally reported about a possible NWA: TNA game several months ago. Now former WWE superstar DLo Brown has revealed some more information in a recent talk with IGN Sports. The game is being developed by EA Games, creators of Def Jam Vendetta. All of the current roster will be providing their voices to the game, as well as being motion captured. TNA is said to be offering all of their wrestlers year long contracts, to ensure that they are all with the federation when the game is released. When asked which matches Dlo would like to see in the game, he replied: 'Like any good wrestling game, we'd definitely need a cage match. Our cage is actually the tallest cage in professional wrestling. It's 20-feet from the apron, while most cages are 15-feet from the apron. It's a little scary up there. Actually, it's a lot scary, let me say that. I'd also like to see one of Dusty Rhodes' Bunk House matches, and stuff like that. Maybe a Raven's Rules Clockwork Orange match. Anything beyond the "Two guys in a ring, I'm going to beat you up" wrestling match would be cool. I know EA Sports likes to go the extra mile, so I'm sure they'll throw something in there that's pretty special'. We will have more info on the NWA: TNA game in coming months!

DEF JAM VENDETTA 2 ONLINE? (10th September 2003)
It has been confirmed to us that Def Jam Vendetta 2 will be released in the US next March, with a UK release soon after. The big question is, will it be online? EA is a massive supporter of PS2's Online Capabilities, and has incorporated it in many of their forthcoming titles. The inclusion of Online wrestling would give it a clear advantage over THQ's Smackdown series. Will the technology be ready in time? Stay tuned to Smackdown5.com for the latest coverage on the Def Jam Vendetta 2 in coming months...

RAW 2 TEAM LAID OFF! (9th September 2003)
Gamers.com reports that almost all of the development team working on WWE RAW 2: Ruthless Aggression has been laid off, according to a source close to the game's development. The majority of the game's staff at Anchor Inc., which developed the game for THQ, reportedly received their walking papers shortly after the game was completed and approved by Microsoft. THQ representatives did not return calls requesting comment.
Where a third WWE game for Xbox might come from in the future is unclear. Anchor is now down to one team, the developers of PRIDE FC. RAW 2's completion concludes a rocky development process that saw lengthy delays -- the game was originally to be released early this year -- and the departure of several key staff members earlier in the year. RAW 2 is currently scheduled for release in the United States later this month.

MASSIVE SMACKDOWN 5 UPDATE! (5th September 2003)
Here is some news regarding the latest version of Smackdown 5. Firstly, Nunzio and Johnny Stamboli were pulled from the roster because their gimmicks and character models would not be completed in time. This now means that the entire F.B.I are missing from the game. (Chuck Palumbo was also removed). Every ‘Legend’ wrestler will travel to the ring in a WrestleMania VI mini ring. Thankfully you will be able to edit their entrances in CAW mode. No female characters will be able to bleed. Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross are playable characters that can tag with your wrestler in season mode only. They will not be selectable in any of the exhibition match types, and may end up computer controlled-only in season mode by the game's final release. On a related note, Jonathan Coachman shows up from time to time to help direct your character. The final list of titles are: WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Championship, WWE Tag Team Championship, World Tag Team Championship, Intercontinental Championship, U.S. Championship, Hardcore Championship, Cruiserweight Championship, and Women's Championship. None of the belts can be defended during an exhibition match. Create-A-belt and Create-A-PPV, two features that were planned to be implemented in the original specs, did not make it past the planning stage and will not be included when the game is released. Recent gimmicks that have been added just in time for season mode include the Unmasked Kane and Evolution. Match types include Single, Tag, 6-Man Tag, Handicap, Hardcore, Royal Rumble, Survival, 3 Stages of Hell, Bra & Panties, Cage, Elimination Tag, First Blood, Hell in a Cell, Iron Man, Ladder, Last Man Standing, Lumber Jack, Slobber Knocker, Special Referee, Submission, Table, TLC, and Elimination Chamber. Speaking of the Elimination Chamber, THQ plans to allow players to break the glass in this particular match-up. Damage taken in ambushes, regular matches, or hardcore bouts affect your health and stamina in later matches if you wrestle more than once on the same night. You can get screwed out of the World Championship title and the Tag Team belts. The complete arena list is as follows: Smackdown A, Smackdown B, RAW A, RAW B, Velocity, Heat, Royal Rumble 2003, No Way Out 2003, Wrestlemania XIX, Backlash 2003, Judgment Day 2003, Bad Blood 2003, Vengeance 2002, Summer Slam 2002, Unforgiven 2002, No Mercy 2002, Survivor Series 2002, Armageddon 2002, Rebellion 2002, ad Insurrextion 2002. With the exception of the improved body morphing and interface. Create-A-Character is nearly identical to last year's version -- right down to the same original songs, nicknames, and introductions (even their number assignments are the same). THQ does plan to add a few more new ones before going final. Smackdown will keep track of every wrestler's Win/Loss/Draw record, the types of matches they wrestled, who they beat/lost too, and how many times they've won a particular title. The match history, however, is only limited to 200 bouts per character before it starts overwriting old matches. Existing wrestlers can have their move sets and entrances altered by the player, but gamers still won't be able to edit their appearances. Above is said to be the final content of Smackdown 5: Here Comes the pain from THQ themselves.

ANOTHER LEGEND REMOVED! (20th August 2003)
In a statement that's sure to disappoint a legion of 80s wrestling fans, THQ has officially withdrawn its confirmation that the Ultimate Warrior will be in the upcoming WWE Smackdown! Here Comes the Pain videogame. Though THQ had originally confirmed with us yesterday that he would be in the game for our roster update article, representatives for the company have since contracted their statement. "Yeah, it was definitely a mistake on our end", said the THQ representative. "We thought that the negotiations had been nailed down but it turns out that they weren't. In fact, it looks as though the Warrior will be going his own separate way and will not appear as a legend in WWE Smackdown at all." News of the Warrior's loss marks the second such blow for Here Comes the Pain in just under a month. Originally shown to the European press in PAL builds on the other side of the Atlantic, Hulk Hogan was also removed from the game's legend roster for similar failed negotiations. Credit to IGN for the info. That brings our roster count back down to 67...

There are several different sections to the create-a-superstar mode. There's profile, which enables you to name and nickname your pro; in ability, you can set the different attributes (strength, agility, jumping, recovery, striking, grappling, joint locks, resilience, escape, and flexibility) of your wrestler; appearance lets you customize your athlete (everything from head type to eyes, nose, mouth, body build, skin color, hair, and more); you can also set entrance (camera view, pyrotechnics, music, walk style, taunts, etc.), logic, and, naturally, a full list of moves. You can customize fight style, standing, running, ground, flying, Irish whip, turnbuckle, double team, taunt, others and special. There are sub-sections of each category. For instance, under fight style, you'll also find fighting pose, ring in style, ring out style, apron to ring, turnbuckle climbing, special state rising and reversal style. NEW RAW 2 SEASON MODE INFO! (15th August 2003)
THQ's creative director Nick Wlodyka has shed more light onto Raw 2's season mode. He explained: 'Career mode is our main innovation. Rather then a straightforward story mode with scripted events, everything that happens is directly influenced by the player's actions. At the start of each weeks show, you're presented with a number of options that allow you to interfere in other people's matches or call out a rival. You could attract a tag-team partner or start a feud with another superstar. You can sneak into your rival's dressing room and steal treasured items. If you choose to come into the next match wearing Angle's medals, you could soon find yourself in a World of pain'. Raw 2 is released in September and is available to pre-order from our Online Store. SMACKDOWN 5 UPDATE! (9th August 2003)
Here is some more Smackdown 5 information, taken from IGN's latest preview. Create-a-belt feature has been taken out again. THQ are still undecided whether it will make it in to the final game. Create a wrestler mode is said to function pretty much like Smackdown 4, but options load quicker. Biographical options have been expanded in CAW mode. Weight classifications are now spread out amongst four different groups (Light, Light Heavy, Heavy, and Super Heavy) and rather than merely selecting a "face" or "heel" in your status window you can manipulate a slider bar in different degrees to pinpoint an exact level of popularity. The most important change, though, is attribute point setup. You can now add to your wrestler's attributes as you progress through the game. There have been slight alterations to the control system. Countering is no longer left to the Square button. Instead, the L1 and L2 triggers act as reversals, blocks, ducks, and similar maneuvers to keep you out of harm's way. These defensive maneuvers aren't random either, as the L1 key is mapped to counter the strike attacks while the L2 button is utilized for countering grapples. This small but subtle change affects the flow of a match drastically and randomly tapping the Square button as fast as possible will no longer save you. Timing the correct button with the correct attack is now the only way that you can get out of the hairier situations. (legends of Wrestling 2 already has this). R1 acts as the focus-switch to alternate between opponents while L1 remains the finisher. The square button has been changed to pick up items or weapons, and the triangle button is still for sprinting. X is the strike button as always, circle initiates grapple, and the right analog stick is used for humiliating your opponents via taunt. The animations for each wrestler have been varied. Even if 2 wrestlers have the same move, their movement and positioning will vary from wrestler to wrestler. Be sure to reserve your copy of Smackdown 5 from our Online Store! MASSIVE SMACKDOWN 5 UPDATE! (6th August 2003)
Here's a massive Smackdown 5 preview, thanks to the kind people over at IGN: As the European press has slowly revealed over the last couple of weeks, the next installment of the incredibly popular WWE Smackdown! is quickly shaping up to become one of the greatest wrestling games ever made. Normally a statement that's met with a great deal of skepticism, the claim that THQ's fifth interpretation of the UPN television show can pull off such a feat is quickly becoming more and more accepted in the hardcore wrestling community. And while it won't possess the heralded grappling mechanics of the Giant Gram series or the flexibility of the Fire Pro franchise, what Here Comes the Pain will have, is unadulterated fan service. THQ and Yukes are banking on it.
Boasting the largest lineup of superstars in the history of the Smackdown! chain, Here Comes the Pain is currently sporting a list of 62 active and legendary wrestlers. What's even more amazing is that the roster continues to grow with new personalities being added to both the current and historic rosters every week. The list we've provided below isn't completely finalized yet (lineups are always subject to change), but the grapplers named herein are those that we can confirm with our own oculars:

A-Train, Batista, Big Show, Booker T., Brock Lesnar, Bubba Ray Dudley, Chavo Guerrero, Chris Beniot, Chris Jericho, D-Von Dudley, Edge, Eddie Guerrero, Eric Bischoff, Goldberg, Goldust, The Hurricane, John Cena, Charlie Haas, Jazz, Johnny Stamboli, Kane, Kevin Nash, Kurt Angle, Lance Storm, Lita, Matt Hardy, Rodney Mack, Nunzio, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, Rhyno, Ric Flair, Rikishi, Rob Van Dam, Sable, Scott Steiner, Shane O' Hare, Shawn Michaels, Shelton Benjamin, Stacy Keibler, Stephanie McMahon, Steven Richards, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Tajiri, Test, The Rock, Torrie Wilson, Triple H, Trish Stratus, Ultimo Dragon, Undertaker, Val Venis and Victoria are who you can expect to see so far.

On a related note, we've been informed by THQ that there are still several personalities that have yet to be added to the final roster, and we've managed to confirm that the rumored Chuck Palumbo and Nathan Jones will not appear in Smackdown at all. Also up in the air is the finalized list of legendary wrestlers as there are several still under negotiation. Sgt Slaughter, Hillbilly Jim, Hawk, Animal, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, The Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, George "the Animal Steele, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, and Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, however, have all been squared away for the final release. Unfortunately one character we established will not be in the game, though, is the balding-one himself, Hollywood Hulk Hogan. Originally reported by several publications as a definite superstar, the Hulkster has been completely omitted from both the legendary and active rosters. Bummer.

The superstars that are presented, though, will be more faithful recreations of their true-life selves. As every single grappler will have multiple versions of the costumes they wear (with some characters boasting as many as four outfits), and ring entrances made to mirror reality as closely as possible. In terms of length, the theme music and ring walks are slightly longer, and wrestlers wear their earned titles in exhibition matches in addition to career mode. Speaking of titles, the create-a-belt feature from Know Your Role has returned. So if the eight available titles aren't enough for you (WWE Championship, World Championship, WWE Tag, World Tag, European, Cruiserweight, Intercontinental, and Hardcore) then you can create one of your very own. And just like the older games you'll be able to defend and lose them to CPU characters and friends via the memory card. Though the latter feature is still pending.

One of the biggest changes this year is the expansion of the career mode. More open-ended and invariably customizable, the season option can be manipulated in innumerable ways. Rather than use the draft system found in last year's version of Smackdown, Here Comes the Pain will use a more superficial "roulette" system that serves no purpose outside of cosmetics. As on the season begins, players will be able to pick and choose the superstars they want for each show without having to give up a character to the computer every other turn. Personalities can be controlled too, as users have full control over who is a face or a heel, and you can even create your own pay-per-view events to accompany the 13-plus that's already included. As an added bonus the number of allowed wrestlers for both the RAW and Smackdown rosters have been expanded significantly, and you can still import your created wrestlers should you want to start from scratch. But that's only the beginning.

Once season mode begins, your wrestler will be given ratings in several skill categories. Numbering five types in all (Strength, Submission, Technique, Speed, and Endurance), these skills are no longer set in stone as they were in the previous installments. Continued success, dominant performances, and devastating beatings will all have an effect on these skills. Which can then diminish or increase your wrestler's aptitude over time. Best described as an almost RPG-like element, this system will allow users to customize existing wrestlers in addition to building their own creations for a more organic, constantly changing experience. And if you want to try out your altered or custom grappler in the exhibition mode, you'll have the choice of either importing the career version or using a default schematic. It's the best of both worlds.

But that aspect of career mode isn't the only area that's been improved. As the dull, first person movement from past years has been completely scrapped and replaced with a more practical, menu-like interface. Moving from area to area is as simple as pressing left or right on the directional pad, and gamers will still be able to enter all the rooms they've grown accustomed to. The boiler room, parking lot, locker room, concession area, and owner's office have returned in addition to several new sections that we're not allowed to talk about quite yet. This should cut the travel time between areas considerably, and the frequency of other personalities in the areas you visit has been increased. Plus, the whole backstage area was modeled after Madison Square Garden which means extra points right off the bat.

And while we're on the subject of new features, another new option is the inclusion of the WWE Shopzone. Modeled after the WWE merchandising wesbite, the Shopzone allows gamers to pick up create-a-wrestler parts, bonus move sets, hidden items, and various other goodies with the money they've earned in career mode. And while no actual number of unlockables has been confirmed thus far, sources have told us that they approach the triple digits. Regardless of how many there are when all is said and done though, THQ promises a much more time-friendly bonus system.

Alas, our time for today has run out and there are still plenty of things to talk about. From the new two-button wrestling system to the additional match types and visual upgrades, WWE Smackdown is an absolute treasure trove of information just waiting to be seen. But don't worry too much about it dear readers, we'll be back again tomorrow with exclusive hands-on impressions, a detailed explanation of the new grappling techniques, never-before-seen movies, and the latest screenshots. You want the pain? Here it comes! Don't forget to order your copy of Smackdown 5 from our Online Store!

LEGENDS OF WRESTLING 3 UPDATE! (6th August 2003)
Legends of Wrestling III is in development at Acclaim Studios Austin for current consoles. The new game will use an entirely rebuilt graphics engine, which should feature enhanced graphics. Legend of Wrestling III's roster will include more than 70 classic wrestlers. Acclaim says that the game will add new features, new types of matches, and an all-new control scheme. The game is scheduled for the spring of 2004. I recently purchased Legends of Wrestling 2 and was pleasently supprised. Those wanting lots of blood, a roster containing REAL legends, interviews with the stars, and a cage door that actually opens, should check it out! Both Legends of Wrestling 1 and 2 are available to purchase from our Online Store!
